Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency causes pernicious anemia or megaloblastic anemia in which red blood cell shapes deforms and becomes very enlarged. Red blood cells are very important for carrying oxygen all around the body. In this type of anemia the bone marrow also become enlarged. An healthy adult should take around 2.5 mcg of vitamin B12 per day. Vitamin B12 is also known as cobalmin. It is a water soluble vitamin,  which means the body expels what it does not use. Its main job is to maintain healthy nerve cells, support proper brain function, and assist in the production of DNA and RNA.

Amount should be taken

  • Infants up to age 6 months: 0.4 mcg
  • Babies age 7-12 months: 0.5 mcg
  • Children age 1-3 years: 0.9 mcg
  • Kids age 4-8 years: 1.2 mcg
  • Children age 9-13 years: 1.8 mcg
  • Teens age 14-18: 2.4 mcg
  • Adults: 2.4 mcg

Note: A pregnant women should take a little more quantity.

1. Weakening of nervous system

Due to the deficiency of vitamin B12, oxygen carrying capacity of hemoglobin decrease due to which the proper supply of oxygen to nervous tissues also decreases and ultimately nervous system weakens. Sensation of needle in hands and feet are observed.

7. Pale skin colour

Deficiency of vitamin B12 causes jaundice in which eyes and skin colur faded. Skin color faded to tinged yellow colour. Liver functioning disturbed as a result it starts accumulating because of it’s accumulation.

8. Difficulty in breathing

Deficiency of vitamin B12 may cause difficulty in breathing. Because of lack of oxygen supply But it abnormal breathing can also be the reason or symptom of other diseases so you have to consult doctor immediately.

9. Mood swings

Vitamin B12 is a precursor of many hormone synthesis. The high levels of homocysteine caused by low levels of B12 could cause damage to the brain tissue and interfere with signals to and from your brain, leading to mood changes.

10. High temperature

High temperature of body may be a symptom in the list of few rare symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency. It is not a common symptom but can be observed.

The best source of vitamin B12 are fruits and vegetables. Dairy products, colored fruits, green vegetables, meat and fish are the main source of vitamin B12. In severe conditions supplements can also be taken but after the consultant of doctor.
